Chelsea have condemned the 'inappropriate chants' referencing the Hillsborough disaster that were heard during their 0-0 draw with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

The 'hateful' songs came on another miserable night for Chelsea, who parted company with head coach Graham Potter on Sunday, with Bruno Saltor failing to get his interim spell off to a winning start in a drab stalemate.

Chants mocking the 1989 tragedy at Hillsborough were audible throughout the game, and shortly after the final whistle the Blues released a statement castigating the sections of the ground from which they were heard.

'Chelsea FC condemns the inappropriate chants heard from some home fans during this evening’s game,' the statement read.

The Premier League meanwhile offered their own response, condemning 'tragedy chanting' and insisting they continue to treat it as an 'unacceptable' issue.

'The Premier League condemns the tragedy chanting heard at tonight’s match between Chelsea and Liverpool,' a tweet from the League’s official Twitter account read.

'We continue to treat this as an unacceptable issue and are seeking to address it as a priority.'

The incident follows reports of similar chants heard during Manchester City's clash with Liverpool on Saturday.

'Manchester City FC are disappointed to have heard inappropriate chants from home fans during today's game,' their statement read.

'We regret any offence these chants may have caused and will continue to work with supporters groups and officials from both clubs to eradicate hateful chanting from this fixture.'

'We are very concerned about the rise of abhorrent chants in stadiums that are related to the Hillsborough disaster and other football-related tragedies,' said an FA spokesperson in the aftermath of the weekend's incident.

'These chants are highly offensive and are deeply upsetting for the families, friends and communities who have been impacted by these devastating events, and we strongly condemn this behaviour.'

Liverpool released a statement shortly after Chelsea, urging people to stop singing such songs.

'We know the impact these vile chants have on those who continue to suffer as a result of football tragedies. For their sake, this has to stop,' they said.
